On November 16, 2010, Prince William and Kate Middleton officially announced they were getting married after nearly 10 years together and several engagement rumors. While news of their engagement sent the media into a frenzy, what truly stirred up headlines was the ring Middleton now sported to commemorate this new life chapter. For some, her engagement ring was a beautiful piece of jewelry worthy to be donned by the future Queen Consort of the United Kingdom (according to the current line of royal succession), but for others, her rock evoked a sense of nostalgia, and rightfully so!

To propose, Prince William presented Kate with a 12-carat, oval Ceylon blue sapphire, framed by a halo of 14 diamonds and set in 18-carat white gold. If this description sounds familiar, it's because it's the same ring Prince Charles (now King Charles III) once used to propose to the late Princess Diana. “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so I thought it was quite nice because, obviously, she’s not going to be around to share in any of the fun and excitement of all this,” Prince William shared during his post-engagement interview with ITV News. “This is my way of keeping her sort of close to it all.”

For decades, royal tradition encouraged members of the family to repurpose heirloom stones when sourcing their engagement rings. And though Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer broke with tradition (they found her famous sparkler from crown jeweler Garrard, which caused a bit of controversy), Kate's ring reestablished the history of the famed stone and aligned it with heirloom traditions.Known as one of the most famous and recognized pieces of jewelry in modern history, people all over the world have sought to duplicate this magnificent engagement ring for their own wedding stories. And while the original piece will never be available to the public, to help you find a similar look, we've put together a list of the best Kate Middleton-inspired engagement rings available to shop now.
