Happy summer. Whether you’re planning your very first beach day of the year or you’ve somehow already cemented your reputation as the best grill party host on the block — we say this change in season (a clean, summery slate, if you will) is as good a cause as any for celebration.

For the rest of your summer birthdays, cookouts, pool parties, or whatever else you have planned: a smattering of some of the best gifts we’ve received lately from loved ones (or from ourselves).

Versatile, portable, and perfect for backyard hangs or park days.

One Wirecutter journalist calls it a “battle-tested bug killer”.

A great way to get through the summer heat in style.

I’m going to be a grandmother for the first time and want to start a nice tradition of a gift to my children when they are expecting their first child. I have four children, and my son and his wife are expecting in September. I’d like something both meaningful but practical. Any suggestions? — M.J.A.

From gifting expert Hannah Morrill:

Congratulations on your first grandchild! And I’m smitten with the idea of new traditions, especially as your family grows. I’m lucky enough to have an engraved pewter baby cup that my grandma gave my parents when I was born. It has the loveliest patina, and my kids can attest it just makes water taste better. I’ve also used it for posies over the years.

Another thought is an artful and easy baby book or a comfy little outfit to come home from the hospital in. A personalized linen-bound New York Times birthday book would be a truly splurgey keepsake. And I always start every new arrival with the beginnings of a robust library: “I am a Bunny,” “Everywhere Babies,” “Jamberry,” and “Hello Hello” are a few of my non-obvious faves.
